PELLSTON— Having traveled the world to home her culinary skills, chef nancy Kelly is now looking to pass along her passion and knowledge for food to those in Northern Michigan.
Kelly’s new Pellston Market, a European-style restored building along U.S. 31 in Pellston, is the place to find gourmet sandwiches, prepared meats, cheeses from around the world, gourmet chocolate, organic ice cream and sorbet, specialty drinks and a variety of other hard-to-find items.
“I’m trying to bring distinctive things into the store,” Kelly said. “It’s really good quality and you can’t get a better sandwich.”

Kelly, 51, is probably better known as the “Travelling Chef,” a catering business she has been operating in the area for about 20 years. catering will still be a large part of her business.
While her home is not far from her new Pellston location, Kelly has traveled to Ireland, Rome, Naples, sardinia, Miami, chicago, and San Francisco. She also spends time in Paris each year, where she took an apprenticeship and learned many of her skills.

“That really elevated everything,” she said.
And now she hopes to elevate the culinary experience at the Pellston Market by not only providing unique food items but helping customers to create culinary masterpieces on their own. Because the store is chef-owned, Kelly said there will be a lot of culinary attachment.

“I’m trying to be accesible to people,” she said, noting that she hopes to create cooking classes this fall. “We’re also big on tasting.”

And with the sour cream coffee muffins, freshly baked breads and other baked goods, organic coffee and handmade sandwiches, there’s a lot of good tasting to do.

“I’m really excites about Pellston. It’s our new culinary Mecca of the north,” Kelly said.
